First, CHANEY’s alarm goes off. Next, he wakes up to head to his job. It isn’t the most glamorous place, but he’s able to pay his bills and get DJ equipment to turn into his musical alter ego at night. There is a sea of people out there, living from the perspective of a generation younger than mine, who are probably unsure about what they want to be (and how to achieve it). As we once did, at their age, we too dreaded having regular jobs to satisfy our parents/guardians/community leaders. Although some of us were able to pay our cell phone bills and purchase miscellaneous items, we weren’t happy with what we were doing.
On a personal note, I did not work at a local restaurant chain, but I did have my time as a supermarket clerk when I was in high school, about to begin college. For as long as I can remember, I have been in the business of helping and serving people. As the visual for the Deep House/House cut shows, there are various kinds of people in the world. Some have better attitudes than others, but if you are not strong or stand your ground, a job like that (as a public servant) may break you.
Theo Altieri—also known as CHANEY—says he was inspired to write this song by the people who often ask, ‘When are you [going to] get a proper job?’ I used to hear similar remarks. People, who are older and out of touch, would suggest that I was ‘playing’ on my computer. Today, those small groups of people who opened their mouths to say those things to me, see it is far from the sandbox ideology. Unfortunate for them, I take no apologies. Just currency.
