Tuesday, the Pew Research Center released a report on the America’s changing religious landscape. The poll found that between 2007 and 2014, fewer people identified themselves as Christians. The survey showed a 7.8% decline in Americans who viewed themselves as Christian. In addition, the number of non-religious Americans grew by 6.7%.
Leave it to Bill O’Reilly to conclude that these numbers are attributed to the media and Hip-Hop in particular. Wednesday night, O’Reilly proclaimed, “the rap industry, for example, often glorifies depraved behavior, and that sinks into the minds of some young people—the group that is most likely to reject religion.”
To blame a genre of music and entire culture for your perceived decline of society is just ridiculous. Like any other art form, Hip-Hop is simply a reflection of society, and not just one segment. There is an entire culture of Christian Rap that might be more popular than ever before. There’s no doubt that Mr. O’Reilly will continue to go out of his way to blame Hip-Hop for nearly everything. We just hope there are sensible people out there that know reaching when they see it.
