“I know it started with a little drama. I hate you had to read it in the paper. But everything is alright with me and your mama.”

Considering the unforgiving circle of women I know, it would be impossible to have a blended family like Alicia Keys’. Based on infidelity and dishonesty alone, I’m unsure they’d be able to put their differences aside for the sake of their families. As I watched the black and white visual, all I could think about was whether I could do it. I could but the mothers’ of the children of the men I’ve dated could not. They wouldn’t want to. They wouldn’t want solitude nor peace for their children and their half-siblings. It would always be a needless, one-sided competition.

Meanwhile, our children would grow up without a bound. They wouldn’t know each other. And right now, at this time, it would be foolish to be without family.

Howbeit, it is important to know that I am not a mother. Nor am I a wife. However, I know what it takes to mend to keep the peace. Watch Alicia Keys’ new video for “Blended Family.” A$AP Rocky, the featured artist, joins in to talk about his childhood. “I remember having four stepmoms at 9.” Rocky’s mother and two sisters also make a cameo.
