I don’t know about you, but when I listened to the words of this new Addi Self song ‘Gyal Dem Daddy’ with fellow Ghanaian artist Kelvyn Boy, it sounded like it comes from a depressing space. I think it is fantastic to be affluent, but the part about dealing with and knowing that someone only wants to be in your presence because of how much money you earn, or what you have access to is sad. If a person can bring something to the table, it feels balanced, and I think most people deserve to experience healthy relationships.
I don’t want to get away from the fact that it is the reality behind some relationships. Frankly, Kelvyn Boy’s vocals uplifted the glumness of the track, but it still doesn’t take the elephant out of the room.
