New Releases: Dai Burger’s “MyMixxxyTape”

Dai Burger for GrungeCake

Burgers. Babes. Babes and burgers? We’ love them both, so there’s no mysterious tale as to why we enjoy Dai Burger, a local New York performing artist whom has shared the stage familiar faces in the music industry today. She is versatile, original, and has a great attitude.

“The Rabbit and its Tricks” by Richardine Bartee

Miike Snow's "The Rabbit" music video

Rabbits: when thinking about the animal two adjectives come to mind: swift and fluffy. I’m unsure if it’s Miike Snow’s intention. Then, of course, other things come to mind: Bugs Bunny, Fatal Attraction, the tortoise, the hare and the character from Winnie the Pooh. Oh, how television has an affect!

Books: “Confessions of A Prairie Bitch: How I Survived Nellie Oleson and Learned to Love Being Hated” by Alison Arngrim

Alison Arngrim

For seven years, Alison Arngrim played a wretched, scheming, selfish, lying, manipulative brat on one of TV history’s most beloved series. Though millions of Little House on the Prairie viewers hated Nellie Oleson and her evil antics, Arngrim grew to love her character—and the freedom and confidence Nellie inspired in her.

In Confessions of a Prairie Bitch, Arngrim describes growing up in Hollywood with her eccentric parents: Thor Arngrim, a talent manager to Liberace and others, whose appetite for publicity was insatiable, and legendary voice actress Norma MacMillan, who played both Gumby and Casper the Friendly Ghost. She recalls her most cherished and often wickedly funny moments behind the scenes of Little House: Michael Landon’s “unsaintly” habit of not wearing underwear; how she and Melissa Gilbert (who played her TV nemesis, Laura Ingalls) became best friends and accidentally got drunk on rum cakes at 7-Eleven; and the only time she and Katherine MacGregor (who played Nellie’s mom) appeared in public in costume, provoking a posse of elementary schoolgirls to attack them.

Arngrim relays all this and more with biting wit, but she also bravely recounts her life’s challenges: her struggle to survive a history of traumatic abuse, depression, and paralyzing shyness; the “secret” her father kept from her for twenty years; and the devastating loss of her “Little House husband” and best friend, Steve Tracy, to AIDS, which inspired her second career in social and political activism. Arngrim describes how Nellie Oleson taught her to be bold, daring, and determined, and how she is eternally grateful to have had the biggest little bitch on the prairie to show her the way.

GrungeCake Magazine Interview with Slice Harvester!

Slice Harvester

This guy is eating a slice of pizza from every pizzeria in New York City and writing about it on his website and quarterly zine! I am sure many have thought about something similar and frowned upon this idea for health reasons, yet I find him very intriguing, daring, creative, crazy, and fun!

Opinions and Reviews: Kruzifix by Stefan Strumbel

KRUZIFIX by Stefan Strumbel

I have seen nothing like this! I just read Dezeenmail #53 containing the technicolour crucifix by Stefan Strumbel and I was blown away by his concept. It has never crossed my mind to see the crucifix like this. Moreover, in saying so, many questions come to mind: Does he know he is brilliant? Is he aware of how much shit he is going to get for doing this? [Laughs] Man, he has to be over it [religion]. Is he is non-Christian? Is he mad at something? Is he telling us something that we will refuse to see? Is he fed up with Christianity? Is he a Catholic? Why now? Why does he call it “Home Sweet Home”? Was this a way to get attention? Well, it worked.

Film and Video: “Exit Through the Gift Shop”

Exit Through the Gift Shop

Recommended by a special person, I traveled to Sunshine Theatre to watch the “Exit Through the Gift Shop“. The documentary was about street art and the most notable artists who create it. In addition, this documentary has a chilling, meaningful twist. I don’t want to give away the story, but I do encourage that you go see it before it leaves theaters. The theatre experience does the film justice! Watch the trailer below and follow this link to find local listings.

Opinions and Reviews: Music Video “Born Free” by Recording Artist M.I.A.

M.I.A.

Red heads, running, stamina, masculinity, pop, and innocence. Initially, watching M.I.A.’s new music video, many questions were formed in my head — with no one to ask, but only to hope when the video was over — I would have answers. Gore and gallant. Plus, I love the use of sound in this video. Very mature. Though, I have read articles who’ve compared “Born Free” to Erykah Badu’s “Window Seat”, — it is not as strong as reporters and journalists make it.

GrungeCake Magazine Interview with Jeantrix Clothing Company by Ny Wesson!

Jeantrix Clothing Company

Pulling threads to the extreme length, Jeantrix Co. walks in the door with an ass full of tulle and a mouth full of leather. ‘Probably does not make sense but that is the beauty of it! I was super stoked to snag an interview with this bold adventurous line and finally knowing what makes us Jeantrix Junkies.

GrungeCake Magazine Interview with Recording Artist Holly & The Bible!

Holly & The Bible

From the depths of Madrid, Spain, with a fearful sound, dreamy voice, and an odd story to tell, Holly & The Bible has been the woman I have chased in our nightly, surreal dreams with flagpoles and knickerbockers. Not only has Holly & The Bible proclaimed herself as Jesus’ lover, but she is GrungeCake’s Sweet Sweet Valentine. All year round.
