Brought to my attention by Ibrahim Ahmed III, DJ Lady S — The Arabian Princess has to be 1/5 beautiful female DJs that this world has to offer. Ibrahim and I teamed up to interview the princess. Read our inquiries and her responses below!

About DJ Lady S:

When we look at the short list of female deejays represented in the European music industry, we can definitely include this young and talented lady, DJ Lady S.

Based in Belgium, Europe, Lady S has been raised by music. She grew up in a house where the reggae sounds came from the basement, up to the 1st floor where her father played (as a DJ) P-funk to soul music to the 2nd floor where her mother used to listen to classic Arabic tunes and finally the 3rd floor where her brother let the Hip-Hop and R&B blast through the speakers. Read more.

Name: Sahera C.
Age: 23
Years in the business: In December 2010, 10 years (Boy, I am getting old).

GrungeCake: As a professional entertainer and businessperson, who is DJ Lady S?
DJ Lady S: I am an outgoing, fun loving, and adventurous person. I love to meet new people. I am always down to try new things, travel around the world, and you can always count on me for a talk or to help others out.

As a girl, I am a shopping addict. Especially, shoes and make up.
When it comes to work, I am very punctual and I take my career very serious. No joking or messing around when we’re talking business. But, please be the first to call me for fun times!

GrungeCake: What does deejaying mean to you?
DJ Lady S: Deejaying is a way to connect with people all over the world. Music is a language you don’t have to be able to speak. If you can find yourself [back] in a song, you just let the record play. It’s so powerful and I love to share my passion with a million others.

GrungeCake: When did you get your break?
DJ Lady S: It was actually 10 years ago, when my brother’s friend asked me to DJ at his party. People were surprised I could actually deliver a DJ set and started. They talking about this little DJ girl, cause that’s how it goes in this industry. Since then, the ball started rolling and the bookings started flowing in. Obviously, I couldn’t play prime time sets cause I was too young, but as time passed by I’ve created a solid name and more and more promoters started to take me seriously. At the age of 16, I was a headliner DJ and started traveling Europe.

GrungeCake: How did you and deejaying connect, was there a remix you heard, a live deejay performance you saw; How and where did you create your union with deejaying?
DJ Lady S: Music runs in the fam. My dad was a DJ back in the early 70′s and currently works as a music producer for several radio shows at the biggest radio station nationally. My uncle has a band and my brother used to DJ too. We had all the equipment at home. So, whenever my brother hit the decks at home I would observe for hours.

Since I had the rhythm in me, I decided to try it myself. When my first two songs blended in perfectly (after a million attempts) I felt so good and proud. That’s when I started to practice everyday after school for hours. Shout out to DJ Spinderella, first female DJ I’d always admire.

GrungeCake: Would you say you are the only Arab female DJ?
DJ Lady S: As far as I know yes. I have several Arabic female friends who rap and sing but I haven’t met another Arabic female DJ. In the Middle East, they call me the first lady of hip-hop. And I’m very proud about that status.

GrungeCake: Have you inspired other native Arab women to get into the music business?
DJ Lady S: Hmmm. I haven’t met any women like that yet, but me and my Arabic female artist friends we talk a lot and stimulate each other to become better and work harder cause it’s not always easy to get the same respect as a male artist for a woman and especially an Arabic woman. Therefore, we inspire each other. I hope I can inspire any women who want to pursue a career in the music business. No matter what you want to do, hard work is required always.

GrungeCake: Can you see yourself deejaying for the rest of your life?
DJ Lady S: No definitely not as a professional DJ. I personally think that being a DJ is something you can do when you’re ‘young’. I mean, young adults evolve so fast these days. There could be a new Lady S created very fast who does it better and looks cuter.

What I’m trying to say is that I am aware of the fact that new talent is born everyday; that someday it will be over for many others and me cause we’ll have to make place for other new upcoming talented people. That doesn’t mean I’m putting an age limit on my career but I’m just being realistic about my future. One thing is for sure; I will always stay active in the music industry.

GrungeCake: How would you define your sets? What guides your song selection?
DJ Lady S: I always try to adapt myself to my crowd, the concept of the party and/ or the image of the club.
I never prepare my songs in a specific order. I have a selection in my head and I add or remove songs at that very moment. It depends on what genre the crowd reacts best. But, I always add my own touch to my set to define myself. I try to distinguish myself from other mainstream club DJ is and be original.

GrungeCake: Do you take requests? If yes, how do you feel about DJ’s who don’t? If no, why?
DJ Lady S: Gosh, I don’t really like requests. I’m not an iPod. I’m also very focused when I’m deejaying. I get in my zone and I hate when people disturb me. But then again, I can’t ignore those people. If I can blend the request(s) into my set, I will play it. If not, I apologize. Also, 90% of the time I’m booked as a guest DJ so I’m playing for a limited time and I need to make it happen in that limited moment which doesn’t always leave me the choice to loose time trying to get requests played.

It has nothing to do with being arrogant, but I have a certain vibe I want to create. It has to happen with the right selection of tracks. So dear partygoer, if I ever rejected one of your requests: it is all business nothing personal.

If you were to lose your hearing abilities, would you continue to DJ? I guess what I am trying to ask is, is Deejaying something you feel within, or is it something you play by ear?
Good Lord, I’ll commit suicide! No, not that extreme… but close. Music is something you must feel within but it’s all about hearing, mixing, blending, cutting, and scratching the record. Therefore, you need your ears. Therefore, me personally I could not deliver a quality DJ set if I would lose my hearing ability. The thought of it gives me goose bumps! she screams.

GrungeCake: Do you have a favorite venue to play?
DJ Lady S: That’s not an easy question. I don’t think I have a favorite venue cause I like change. I love traveling the world and DJ in big venues, small clubs, outdoor parties etc. But I think festivals are my favorite. I get adrenaline rushes from playing in front of large crowds.

GrungeCake: When will you hit the ‘mainstream’ American market?
DJ Lady S: Good question… I don’t know. Let me take advantage of this moment and address all American club promoters: Book DJ Lady now. (laughs)
Actually, I hope to share my love for music with the American party people as soon as possible, but I always held onto this thought that the US is so big and I have the impression that everyone want to be an artist. The US is already full of talent, so why would a promoter make the cost and get a DJ from overseas who could do the same thing as the dude around the corner. A lot of promoters think like this and don’t give other international DJ’s the chance to rock the club unless they’re celebrity DJ’s. I’m not dissing anyone now, I can understand his or her way of thinking. That’s why I haven’t been focusing on the US market but I’m not worried. My US time will come soon.

GrungeCake: Are there differences or similarities are there between a European crowd and an American crowd?
DJ Lady S: As a Hip-Hop/R&B DJ playing in the US is so (Lady S emphasizes on “so”) dope because all the music comes from the States. Of course, everyone else in the world has access to the Internet and can get the new releases simultaneously but it takes a little more time for the European crowd to get to know the new music. It usually takes a month before I can play new American releases in the club and get a good reaction while DJ’s in the US can’t wait for a track to release so they can play it that very night at the club and have the crowd going crazy. Europeans need to get familiar with the song on radio, in the charts, on television and then the song will be accepted at the club. It’s funny when I think about the whole process a song has to go through. It could be no. 1 in the US but that doesn’t mean people over here will give it the same credit.

GrungeCake: Who coined the term ‘The Arabian Princess’ and why?
DJ Lady S: Honestly, I did not come up with that name. It was my friend and fellow colleague DJ Baby Yu who created that term. He used to call me, “The Arabian Princess” just for fun. Then I was like, “What if I start using that name just as a gimmick?” It adds a little flavor to DJ Lady S.

GrungeCake: And last, what does GrungeCake mean to you?
DJ Lady S: GrungeCake is funky man! I love it how they cover topics as music, science and health, film, food and drinks, etc. It’s not your average gossip website, you can actually learn new things. And they give everyone the opportunity to share their story. I don’t have to be a Beyonce or Gaga to get my shine at GrungeCake.

Shout out to my buddy Ibrahim Ahmed III for introducing me to Yams… Thanks mama, you fkcn rock! Oh yeah, follow me on twitter @djladys. Peace, love, music, and glam!

About Williamsburg Fashion Weekend

Covering Williamsburg Fashion Weekend this September, GrungeCake is proud to share the details of the weekend!

Williamsburg Fashion Weekend continues to show the work of designers who have their fingers on the hip and now, with a nod to the past and wide-open eyes on the future. In this, our seventh season, we’ve assembled a dozen young designers who make one-of-a-kind garments or small-run collections, with an emphasis on fair-trade, eco-friendliness, artisan techniques and transparent business practices, celebrating the handmade and the visionary.

WFW provides a platform for emerging designers who display their collections in non-traditional formats from live music and dance to choreographed mixed media extravaganzas.

Arthur Arbit, founder and curator of WFW, has a passion for the unwavering, personal, take-no-prisoners aesthetic vision. A designer and fine artist himself, he is interested in combining all forms of performance art into his fashion shows.

This season’s event will be held at Glasslands Gallery, located at 289 Kent Ave. Williamsburg, Brooklyn on September 17th and 18th, 2010. Doors open at 8pm. Entry is $8.

My Interview with artist Reallionaire Jream

Blurb from Jazzlyn Kirkland:

Tuesday, August 24th. That’s today’s date, what does this day mean? Not much to most people, but for me, today is the day that I get a chance to sit down and talk to Reallionaire Jream.

Born into this world as Jerime Shelton, a great new artist that is bringing the authenticity back to Hip-Hop. Reallionaire hails from the fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada (and yes, that was in my infomercial voice) and has spent most of his youth in a small town in Illinois by the name of “Alton” or better know by him as “A Little Town Of Ni***s” (laughs).

Jerime is a very light-hearted person with an amazing personality and has the ability to turn even the most skeptical person into a fan. RJ has also been able to rock crowds in famous venues such as The House of Blues, The Beauty Bar (Las Vegas), and even New York’s oldest open mic event, End of the Weak. I am really happy that I got the opportunity to chat up Reallionaire Jream and I am going to share that conversation with you, my fellow GrungeCakers, so… come on!

MP3: “I Ain’t Ready Yet” by Reallionaire Jream

GrungeCake: So what’s going on Mr. Jream? How have you been?

Reallionaire Jream: I’m doing great. I just returned to the U.S. I spent some time over in Europe.

GrungeCake: Awesome, What were you out in Europe doing?

Reallionaire Jream: Actually, I was in Europe doing some shows, seeing the sights, observing the culture, I stayed in South Germany and while I was there, I got a chance to get a lot of writing done. It was my first time out there and I really enjoyed myself. I’m planning on heading back over in October for October Fest (smiles).

GC: So, I guess your really liking the European vibe.

RJ: Yes.

GC: How are the audiences over there compared to the states?

RJ: Pretty good actually. I like the fact that most of the people in their audience aren’t really familiar with me. It seems like those people are the ones that are more receptible [?] to listening. I’m something new and I love being the new kid.

GC: Right on! So, I’ve got a question that I’ve been dying to ask — since I found out about you. What’s your name all about, Can you please give me the rundown on that?

RJ: Good one (laughing). I’d be delighted to answer that for you. Well I was sitting around, about to load my music onto a site and I started thinking:

Hmm… I don’t have a “name” yet. Then, I went to brainstorm and it came about like this:
My mother’s astrological sign is Leo and my fathers’ an Aries… so, lionare came from the combination of that. I thought that going with the same theme: my parents and how they are something very “real” in my life, that’s where Reallionaire started. As for the Jream part, that is simply how my name has always been mispronounced, because it is spelled Jerime. Ta da! You’ve got yourself Reallionaire Jream.

GC: Wow! Seriously, that’s way deeper than I initially thought.

RJ: Yep, It’s real!

GC: So, when did you realize you wanted to become an MC?

RJ: I’ve always had the desire to write and when I was young, it started out as jotting some things down on a flashcard, and then, the flashcards started filling up and they turned into pages. When I was in college, I started journaling and writing poetry and that’s when it all began.

GC: So why should the readers of GrungeCake listen to Reallionaire, You’ve got 10 seconds. Sell your self… Go!

RJ: (Laughs) I’m in this to make honest and authentic music. What I talk about has an underlying common ground for people to relate to, and its good music to bump to that also has that straight to the heart intensity.

GC: Times up! Good job. What’s next for you?

RJ: I’m in the process of doing a mix tape due out in October called “The Jraft”.

GC: That’s what’s up, so do you have any closing words for the readers Mr. Jream?

Reallionaire Jream: This is why I’m fly gravity, and I made a deal / Said I could defy him as long as I bring it real / [This is] from the song “Collison” off of my first album.

There we go, Reallionaire Jream folks. I really hope you guys go check him out. Links are below. If you’re going to be in South Germany in October, come down and see Reallionaire live!

Though, you might be a girl who doesn’t like porn or pornographic tactics to sell books, the faux-porn trailers below made me read “Snuff” online! Read what I read here.

About “Snuff”:

From the vantage point of three men waiting in line to be three of the 600 men Cassie Wright plans on having sex with on camera to break a world record, Snuff is not for the shy and reserved.

Number 600 is the man who introduced Cassie to the industry and the man who introduces us to the rest of the men waiting in line. Number 72 is not only one of the youngest ones there — 20 something years old — but he is one of the too many men claiming to be Cassie’s son. The last man, number 137, has been in the television biz and is looking to get his career back on track by screwing an on-the-verge-of-being-dried-up porn queen.

This is not a sex novel — sorry, gentlemen. It is a story of men bonding over a similar interest, getting to know one another through their future sexual conquest, and, for a few, trying to find — and twistedly bang — their misplaced mother. There is a surprising lack of sex for a novel about a porn star and her 600 exploits. But don’t be turned off by this. There’s still some sex, plenty of laughs, and some telling moments as each of the three main narrators finds something buried deep within himself.

One more time, Palahniuk approaches, pushes, and mockingly steps over the line with Snuff. If it isn’t enough to have a woman conquering 600 men in one day and to get a first class voyage deep inside the porn industry, throw more mommy issues and even some daddy issues into the picture. Just when you thought Palahniuk couldn’t get any more off the wall, in walks Cassie Wright.

Yesterday, Monday August 2, 2010, GrungeCake Magazine covered Kosha Dillz’s show at Le Poisson Rouge in the West Village of New York City. Joined by some of the greatest entrepreneurs and musicians, we were intrigued by domestic interior design, the acts, the night, and the performance of our friends! Stay tuned for footage.

Kosha Dillz warms up the crowd before he starts his set: tells us who is he, where he’s from, talks to his fans, introduces his band, thanks fellow musician Kyle Rapps for the water, mentions Twitter, pokes fun at the name “Le Poisson Rouge”, and gets right into it!

*A live EPK at its finest. New artists learn from him.

I’ve known Dai(nene) for a few years. The first time I interviewed her, we talked about her dance moves to Lil’ Mama’s songs, now she dances to her own music. Dai Burger is a smokin’ New York City live performer who raps, sings, dances, and works at Patricia Fields. She is so hot, I decided to give her the cover of GrungeCake Magazine’s newest magazine, “The Delivery” Monthly!

In this issue, Dai Burger talks to GrungeCake about her new free music release, “MyMixxxyTape“, her beginnings, how she plans to deliver as a new artist, what makes her a “wild thing“, and more!

This issue also features over 50 exclusive photos of Dai Burger, free mp3s and a free poster! Listen to my 4 favourite tracks below. To download the whole tape, click here. Thank you.

I read a lot, but I haven’t come across something this massive in a while. To hear that restaurants and markets are throwing away food is one thing. Seeing a figure is another. Every year, restaurants, supermarkets, other food service establishments, and individual households dump an average of 14 billion pounds of food waste. 14 billion pounds of food? Like food, if good health and free dentistry was measurable, I would distribute as many pounds of it. Why aren’t we donating this food on the weekends to people who’re going hungry in this recession, college students who’re not fortunate, and to low income neighborhoods?

Why throw away all of that [good] food when people are hungry? Is it better to throw it away than to distribute it to the community? I can understand why a supermarket or restaurant might not want to do that [directly], but donating it to a non-profit or other organizations to feed the youth, mothers, and children, and families… perhaps, my heart is too large.

Anyway, I signed a petition to tell big business to stop wasting food. If you’re interesting and want to join the fight kindly click here to sign.
The Rabbit and its Tricks

Rabbits: when thinking about the animal two adjectives come to mind: swift and fluffy. I’m unsure if it’s Miike Snow’s intention. Then, of course, other things come to mind: Bugs Bunny, Fatal Attraction, the tortoise, the hare and the character from Winnie the Pooh. Oh, how television has an affect!

“The rabbit” often, portrayed as the trickster, sly character who uses swiftness and tricks to win [a competition], never wins. Does that relate to this video? Is it supposed to? After all, the rabbit does have antelope or deer ears. (Shrugs) Miike Snow, what the fuck?

We’ve posted this video on our Facebook fan page a few weeks ago. Our fans didn’t have too much to say about it. In conclusion, I have been reading comments by others on multiple websites: ie: magazines, blogs, and music outlets have denounced the video offensive, not pairing with the song, etc. How do I defend that? Am I supposed to?

I believe the director shot a music video “contrary” to the vibe of the song or genre to in fact, make you watch the video! It is a great video. I love love love the quality, the treatments, the director’s cuts, the way we don’t hear what the actors are saying, you focus on the video and the music installs in you, because it is the only thing you are hearing.

It’s like how I remember the first time I heard a specific song according to the place I was and whom I was with. It did a damned great job of infusing that to me.

Before this moment, I didn’t know who Miike Snow was, but quickly, I became a fan. Watch the music video below [again] to fall in with me, just one more time.

July 30th 2010, Brussels – Malaysian electropop singer Ze! premieres new music video “Boys I Like” simultaneously in 5 different cities around the globe at midnight tonight.

“Boys I Like” was shot in Hollywood last April by a team of new and upcoming film directors collectively known as Schlub Films. Ze! met director Eugene Lee back in 2008 when she was participating in an Asian Talent Show called, Sutasi in which Lee was a host. The two decided to work together on this music video when Ze! visited LA, stayed in Lee’s apartment and met his friendly group of actor-friends.

“Working with the Schlubs was a lot of fun” says Ze!. “They’re a hyperactive bunch with an eternity of ideas. They’ve done a few really good short films but it was their first time producing a music video, which was maybe what made the process even more exciting.”

“Hanging out with Eugene’s friends was a great experience as it gave me an insight as to what life is really like as actors. The annoying thing is they’re all amazing actors which only made me feel like a goofball on set. They were at least nice enough not to laugh at me.”

‘Boys I Like’ is written by Ze! and producer Ruben Debusschere; a track taken off of Ze!’s new electro-pop album I Am Glam and was the first single released in 2007 along with 3 remixes. I Am Glam is distributed worldwide by Believe Digital and now available for download via all major digital music stores including iTunes, Amazon, eMusic, Napster, Nokia Music Store and more.

Though, we wish there was more dialogue from Ze! cause her [talking] voice is cute, we really enjoyed this video. Our favourite look: Ze! in her red bra!. We love your choice, honey. We would have chosen the man with the Ze! thunderbolt, too! It’s all about branding baby! (Sticks tongue out)
