I Want To Feel The Electric

Journey to the 2010 Electric Daisy Carnival

Friday June 25th, 2010, a day to remember for the rest of our lives. Who is this we that I speak of? Well, part 1 of we: Jazzlyn Kirkland, a GrungeCaker and part 2 is my assistant Laicee Chandler, a raver. I like saying, “we“. Sorry. Moreover, here’s what happens as we go on an adventure to The 2010 Electric Daisy Carnival: The largest annual electronic music festival in the U.S.!

(Note to Reader: I have NEVER attended a rave or anything near a rave in my entire life, So this will be interesting)

Thursday June 24th 1:00pm – “Screeeeech” Goes the tires on 4th and Fremont Street in Las Vegas, Nevada as my ride comes to pick me up outside my job. Me, I’m in full on jammies with a huge hello kitty bag, a zebra print blanket and oh yes the flip-flops. I’m nervous about this 4 1/2 hour ride from Las Vegas to Los Angeles that I’m going on for the first time, might as well be comfy.

Thursday June 24th 3:15pm – “Jazz have you even been to the state line before? ” NO, “Well this is where we are.” So were in Primm getting some grub and meeting up with two of Laicee’s friends that are also heading to LA for EDC. We chit chat and munch and apparently I’m crazy for making EDC my first rave because its something called a Massive and usually people go to those once they’ve been on the rave scene for a while. NOW IM SCARED

Thursday June 24th 5:45pm – YAY! Were in Los Angeles, heading to Hollywood to get checked into our hotel room, which was located right by the famous Hollywood & Highland Dr. It’s almost EDC time I can tell because everyone we have come across in our hotel is here for it.

Friday is here finally I wake up bright and early due to the fact that we were having some miscommunication errors when trying to get the press pass information set up and confirmed for my assistant, Once that had been all taken care of it was time to get all dolled up for my first rave ahhhh excitement but then I remembered… 4 girls / 1 hotel room which means 4 girls / 1 bathroom! Well, we figured out a schedule and since we were getting ready for the actual event about 3 1/2 hours early, we had enough time to get ready. The first outfit of the night for me was my “GrungeCake Crisis ” shirt, paired with some black skinny jeans, big lashes, my candy bracelets, and lots and lots of glitter. As were getting ready to hit the road I get a lecture by the girls (seeing that I’m a newbie and all) it mostly consisted of stay together, make a meet up spot and time in the event that we do get separated, cell phones are useless once inside of the arena and don’t eat or drink anything that someone offers you, Good rules to go by. CALIFORNIA TRAFFIC Ahh we get on the freeway and the traffic is at a complete standstill so what do we do now… take the side streets. All of the girls are either from LA or very familiar so we head to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum like a bullet, we get there in about 45 min and got very lucky with free parking ya and now begins the trip that is Electric Daisy Carnival.

Friday June 25th 3:20pm – I have never and I mean NEVER seen anything like this before in my life. I can literally see thousands of people as we collectively walk into the entrance to the event. Tall, short, fat, thin, black white and everything in between. The actual carnival rides, the many massive stages, the street performers, the lighting and the atmosphere. I haven’t even experienced a dj set and I already feel elated just being here, all the hugs and excitement I’m so ready for the music.

Friday June 25th 8:35pm – I’m already tired, I’ve been ripping and running looking for the media entrance to no avail I have at least walked the length of the entire stadium 3 or 4 times, We lost the other 2 girls that came with us, and we tried calling and texting both them and the people in charge of press with no success. So as I’m climbing the world famous stairs of coliseums I decide its time for me to enjoy myself, were on our way to the stage named Kinetic Fields to catch the last part of Dirty South’s dj set. The sound system is amazing even though we really wanted to be down on the floor with the crowd but they had this stupid line that worked when someone left, they let someone in which is crazy but whatever, so that leaves us in the stands but apparently the floor met capacity early on in the day because even the stands were near full, but the view was amazing and I had never listened to Dirty South before this and it was pretty good, up next Swedish House Mafia.

Friday June 25th 11:10pm – AND THE CROWD GOES CRAZY! Kaskade just started his dj set and OMG from the time that Dirty South was on until now the crowd has to be at least double the size and it seems like most of the people are here for Kaskade. I’ve listened to this dj before I came here and I actually really like his music already but live is a whole different story if you think you can feel the music when your at home blasting your speakers, or in the car bumping while your out and about it has nothing on what I’m experiencing in this moment. The light show, the sweaty glowing bodies, the singing in unison and the crowd is literally going crazy this is the biggest response I’ve seen all night and I love it the music is amazing and we found the other half of our group and were just… happy.

Saturday June 26th 3:01am – The security guards here must have mental issues because this is crazy, there are fights breaking out, security guards taking off their shirts to fight umm, can we just get out of here, the ground is so gross there are barley any trash cans anywhere ahhhh what did I just step into ok breath…. just follow the crowd, The show is over with for tonite, Kaskade was the best of the night for me. Deadmau5 came on after but they were ok I guess, well to me at least because the crowd was eating it up I guess it wasn’t for me but over today was ok besides the guards, the guards, and the guards, they didn’t know anything plain and simple its like they got people and gave them yellow shirts in trade for some McDonald’s or something. But my first day at my first rave has officially come to a close and it was totally worth all the bullshit it took to get here, and were still not done yet there’s one more day to go.

Saturday has arrived, the suns in my eyes and my body aches, yes I did just go to a rave yesterday, and were up and at em again today standing in front of the arena waiting for the gates to open. And yes again I lost 2 of the girls but its a different set now and were trying to find each other before we get into the coliseums dead zone. POP POP POP! Why are all those people running this way? OMG move out of the way. We were totally in the middle of a riot, like a full blown tear gas guns, cops running on foot and blocking off all the entrances with the cop cars, we moved out of the way in time we didn’t get gassed and once everything calmed down we walked toward the gates to see what was going on just to find that no one was there but security staff blocking the entrances. So… not only cant we find our friends we don’t know if they are on the side we are on or on the other side of the police barricade, all of this and we haven’t even made it inside yet. So this ordeal goes on for quite a while but we finally get in around 5ish 6ish it was nutty but now we still cant find our friends so we go on a search for hours for both them and the press interview box… NOTHING, its almost 9:00pm lets go see who’s on at the coliseum. Benny Benassi is on, its pretty good, I’m tired I’m sleepy we cant find anything I just want to go home at this point then when I thought things couldn’t get any worst, guess who’s emceeing Benny Benassi’s dj set… LIL JON omg my head already hurts please someone cut his mic, I cant even enjoy the music ok I’m going to stop with the complaining…. 11:45 rolls around we find our girls and we leave the coliseum. Fin.

The Good & the Bad
So I’m alive yes I lived through the people being crushed on the stairs, the security starting brawls in the walkways, and yes the riot. And even with all that said this has to be one of the best experiences I’ve ever had in my life ever but this is a event review so I’m going to go over the highlights and low lights of this crazy, scary, wonderful, weird life changing journey.

The Good
The Music – Amazing the Dj sets were so good, the sound system made you feel every beat.
The Surroundings – The carnival rides, the face painting, the actual arena as far as being able to hold that many people in one place at one time.
The Stage – The sheer size of the stages were amazing along with the designs, and architecture.
The People – Pretty much everyone I came across had such a pleasant demeanor about them so friendly, waving say hi and hugging complete strangers making sure they were having a good time, lots of peace, love and unity.
The Lighting/Fireworks – AHHHH the lightshows were sick I loved the laser lights and the lighting from the stage especially when it was synchronized with the fireworks and the smog machines love LOVED IT!

The Bad
The Security – Jerks, Idiots umm what else can I call them. None of them knew where or how to get to anything and like I said before a lot of guards were starting brawls with the crowd, PLEASE get better help do a better screening process or go through a different company pretty please with cherries onto.
The Floor Rule – Ok the One off/One on rule obviously didn’t work there should be a better system implemented like higher price for floor tickets or wrist bands or something because this was a catastrophe there were people pissing and shitting on the walls down there because they knew once they left they couldn’t get back down there something’s gotta be done about that.
The Lines – Ok this is a personal rant, I know I know there were tons and tons of people there so there were bound to be lines but the problem I personally had with lines is the fact that people were running and pushing and shoving to get to the front where like 3 guards were working, and it was obviously set up to hold more workers.
The Price of Water – Ok so EVERYONE knows that a lot of people at raves do drugs, and that even the people that are not doing drugs are going to become dehydrated from being out in the California sun for hours on end, can someone throw them some water, a hose or something, there were so many people passing out from dehydration.
The Lack of Garbage Cans – Iiick there was trash every where, and its hard enough as it is to get people to throw their garbage away at least have more cans available to throw it in please.

- Electric Daisy Carnival is a massive that the streets of Los Angeles can only handle once a year. With a turn out of 185,000+ people. How can you expect anything other then pure excitement and pure joy. EDC is a music festival that all responsible ages can enjoy. I would have to say that EDC was by far the best and most moving experience I have ever had the chance to enjoy and share with new and old friends alike. Some of the most popular DJs in the whole world were there performing under the electric sky. Such artist as Kaskade, Boys Noise, Above & Beyond, Deadmau5, Armin Van Buran, Benni Benassi and many more amazing djs. I personally had the privilege of meeting Boys Noise and Benny Benassi. When I spoke with them and asked what they thought of EDC both answers were pretty much the same. They said, “When they took the stage and saw those thousands of fans screaming for them that it was breath taking.” I know seeing the crowd of people with their hands up in unity was the most amazing sight. Every one came together and put there differences aside and united under the starry sky to enjoy the electronic sounds that many of these djs brought in full force for them. The stage visuals and fire works were amazing the artists were so on point that when a hard bass line dropped they did it in style with the fireworks and flamethrowers. I would have to say overall this years EDC was one for the record books. I feel privileged that I was able to enjoy it. – Laicee Chandler

- Overall, I will give it to the people of INSOMNIAC for putting on such a good show with such a good lineup and given the fact that there were about 200,000 people there we will let the stupid guards slide… This year =) I really enjoyed myself I learned a lot about the rave culture, Like the definition of P.L.U.R. and why people wear candy, and that this is an event that you go to, to feel and share the unity that everyone is talking about. Thanks everyone that allowed me to have this experience, Yams obviously you are a life saver I would have totally been broke in L.A. if it wasn’t for you, John Ochoa & Alexandra Greenberg of MSO PR I called you guys like a million times but in the end you got everything situated for me, To my friend/assistant Laicee Chandler if it wasn’t for you I wouldn’t have even known about EDC in the first place and last but not least INSOMNIAC for putting on such an amazing event, I’m already looking for some of those cute fuzzy boots to wear next year – Jazzlyn Kirkland

Name. I have known Name for quite some time. Online friend turned one of my favourite musicians ever, Name manages to sound like disco and dance music from the 80s and dress the part — his lyrics are catchy, meaningful, and he will earn awards in the near future. I can feel it! Kindly visit this link to listen and click the banner to buy his album, Drum: Thanks.
GrungeCake: If love were a colour, what would it be?

Name: Love always changes shades of colour. Red, blue, green or maybe peachy keen are the most viable ones to me. Red is an exciting, sometimes dangerous one. Blue is the all to often sad one. Green is the sometimes jealous one. Peachy keen is the rare one. Too good to be true almost!

GrungeCake: How did you come up with the chorus for Alphabet Love?

Name: A simple melody often calls for a simple chorus. The whole late 50′s/early 60′s vibe of the song had me free associating love in the most sweet and naive way.

GrungeCake: According to my handy dandy, Wikipedia, Love is any of a number of emotions and experiences related to a sense of strong affection. The word love can refer to a variety of different feelings, states, and attitudes, ranging from generic pleasure (“I loved that meal”) to intense interpersonal attraction (“I love my girlfriend”). This diversity of meanings, combined with the complexity of the feelings involved, makes love unusually difficult to consistently define, even compared to other emotional states. If you had to define what love is, using half of the Norwegian alphabet, what would be your definition?

Name: Haha. This is getting too time consuming! Our alphabet is basically the same as the english one except we add the letters ÆØÅ after yours is over. Maybe those three letters were specifically designed for a task such as this? Any who, I’m way too lazy for this!

Number of Views :158

Members,

Ning.com announced new pricing plans for its networking website. Instead of continuing our community-based forum [on the Ning platform], GrungeCake.com started its own at my.grungecake.com.

It is free, and easy to maneuver. We have equipped the site with a Soundcloud dropbox – making it easy to share music with us. This dropbox is located via the About link. Kindly visit my.grungecake.com to get started on your account.

Notice from Ning:

In July, we will rollout three new pricing plans and begin phasing out our free service. Many of you chose the Ning Platform to build your communities because it is the easiest to use, has the most reliable performance and easily scales to hundreds of thousands of members. Our shift to a paid service model will enable us to focus to a greater degree on enhancing the features, performance, and services we offer to our paying Network Creators. You will immediately see greater control over your network branding, design, and member experience. All three plans offer an incredible value relative to our current premium services offerings.

You can find this message by clicking here: http://about.ning.com/announcement/?xg_source=announcement_bar

When Ning pulls the plug in July, grungecake.ning.com deletes. Take this time to save any photos, videos, and contacts that you have made.

Thank you,
Richardine Bartee

From Vogue.com written by Chelsea Zalopany:

There is something indubitably American about (a) denim and (b) two brainy, hustling New York City hipsters. Chantel Valentene, a native of Brooklyn, first met the small-town Louisianan Durango Adams while they were both studying at the Fashion Institute of Technology. After five years of freelance designing, these self-proclaimed “denim-heads” quietly launched their jeans line, Resin—you might have stumbled across it in Barneys—at the end of last year—with the help of friend and co-founder of Paper Denim & Cloth Chris Gilbert. “We all brainstormed for months on why there needs to be another denim brand in the market,” says Valentene.
Clearly they thought one does. What separates Resin from the glut of denim labels is its inventive approach to the most utilitarian fabric on the planet. The name of the brand derives from their use of synthetic resins (usually it’s a natural substance found in plants and trees). “Resin, the chemical solution, changed the face of the denim industry from the basic stone and acid washes of the eighties to the crisp and gloss-coated unwashed denim of today,” explains Valentene.

Technicalities aside, it’s evident they’re doing something right from the looks of the brand’s body-hugging burnished skinny, the Lariat ($148), which is manipulated to instantly feel worn-out while being soft to the touch. Or their subtly washed black-garnet signature skinny jean, the Catalyst ($154). The Artisan denim trouser ($154)—which brought them to our attention—takes its cue from menswear. “We’ve relaxed the fit and shortened the length to keep it sexy yet comfortable,” says Adams. There is an artsy (installment artist Ibrahim Ahmed III designed artwork for the pocket linings) and organic feel to the label, which is as effortlessly cool as this pair of jeans-obsessed designers.

If it isn’t obvious, the title of this blog is simple, humorous, and interesting. Dooky. I can almost swear, Kennebrew makes the ugliest of words, so ‘cool’. But(t). Seriously, Kennebrew covers a variety of topics: her dream-dwelling-place, her past in editorial photography, her crafts, the deaths of music publications — that I also liked and wanted to work for, and Pieter Hugo. Now, that’s a dooky blog for yuh. Check it out when you don’t have shxt to do! I just had to say that. This blog is dedicated to exploring visual and pop culture concepts, working out ideas bragging and re-contextualizing current events to expose absurdity. The blog was started by Chanel Kennebrew and Anuli holds down most of the day to day postings. When we aren’t brain fuggling, raising miniature elephants and making ourselves sound way cooler than we are, you can find us making really fun stuff for the Junkprints fans, consumers and munchkinlanders.
