As Book Thug Nation became my latest literary fatal attraction, I saw an ad for a zine release and decided to contact Slice Harvester for an interview.

The ad read: The Slice Harvester has eaten a slice of pizza in every pizzeria in Manhattan north of 42nd street and lived to tell about it! Join him, and free pizza from his favorite pizzeria, Thursday night as he reads from the highly anticipated release of Vol. 2 of Slice Harvester, The Zine.

Not knowing much about his mysteriousness, I prepared myself for a video interview. Wrong! Though, we weren’t able to take photographs of him or show you what he looks like via video, we were allowed to extract the audio from the video we recorded. He held the camera and pointed it at me whilst he spoke into the microphone.

Who is Slice Harvester? Why in Pete’s name is he such a f*cking big deal?

This guy is eating a slice of pizza from every pizzeria in New York City and writing about it on his website and quarterly zine! I am sure many have thought about something similar and frowned upon this idea for health reasons, yet I find him very intriguing, daring, creative, crazy, and fun!

A few days ago, Accidental Seabirds was in my office and I had the pleasure of picking his brains. Kindly watch Accidental Seabird’s music video below and leave a comment of critique.

Words by Accidental Seabirds: The video for “Pillows” was made by VAMP group from Philadelphia. They’re new, but they’re really good at what they do and they’re fun to work with. They wanted me to choose the location for the shoot. I chose a desolate boardwalk for the set, because [to me] it metaphorically represents what the song is about. Sort of.

The song has a few ideas within, but the central theme is substance abuse and addiction. It’s based on a dear friend of mine who nearly destroyed himself. Too many people, especially young people, very carelessly use drugs these days because they’re unaware of the dangers or they don’t realize how serious drug abuse can become. Shit is real, kids are dying, and we need to address these issues because young folks obviously don’t listen to their parents or any figure of authority for that matter. It’s not cool to be hooked on pills or whatever and it’s not cool for parents to bury their children.

Anyway, the boardwalk is supposed to be this place of entertainment and escape from daily life but when no one else is there the fun seems really phony and you’re left with stray cats, seagulls, and the bottom of the ocean calling your name.

Gina Rene’s Bio:

Gina Rene found her earliest musical influences inside two generations of her very own multi-cultural family. Her grandfather Leon Rene wrote the Rock and Roll classic, “Rockin’ Robin” as well as Louis Armstrong’s theme song “Sleepy Time Down South.” Her father wrote “wham bam” which featured blues legend Johnny “Guitar” Watson and drummer Earl Palmer. Going well beyond her lineage, everything from the sounds of 1940’s torch style singing, coupled with the soul of Chaka Khan and Prince took hold of her creative soul. However, the raw creativity of 80’s Hip-Hop became the final ingredient of the harmonic recipe that gave birth to Gina Rene’s incomparable musical style. A native of the bohemian city of Santa Cruz, California, Gina Rene grew up performing everywhere she could including the Philippines, Malaysia, Mexico City, New York, Chicago, Toronto, Vancouver, Detroit, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, and more.

Art has always played a major part in my musical journey. After my father passed away leaving me with his collection. I realized how therapeutic music is and how it helps me deal with the loss. Shortly after his death, I became a producer to reinvent music and use it as an instrument to help others and myself. Keeping listeners tuned in with offbeat rhythms and new ways to hear things has opened some doors for me, but I’m not in it to sell my soul, just to deliver something different.
