Blurb from YAMS:

David Alexander of Cadre Cartel is a 22 year old Graphic Designer from Washington, D.C. who currently resides in San Francisco, California. For more of their world, kindly click here.

GrungeCake: How long has Team Titans and Cadre Cartel been in co-existence?

Cadre Cartel: Team Titans Entertainment has been around since 2007 and Cadre Cartel was set up in early 2009.

GrungeCake: You have mentioned, “we want to bring a sense of unity and creativity back into the music industry?” When did it leave? Kindly elaborate on your statement.

Cadre Cartel: Currently, there are a lot of “crab in a barrel“ situations going on. Not wanting to work with someone because of their status, etc. or hating on someone because they are trying something different. In Hip-Hop’s early days, it was for the love of the art, the expression. Not what you look like or what car you drive. Everyone helped each other to get where they wanted to be and tried to learn from one another. That’s something we are trying help bring back.

GrungeCake: Which album covers, or disfigurement were or are you displeased with?

Cadre Cartel: I’m not displeased with any piece. I’m just trying to bring a different take with my work. I’ve been an art major since high school and trained in many different types of media. With that gift, I’m trying to bring those techniques out in my pieces to make sure there are as unique as possible for the client.

GrungeCake: How do you know which artists are worth your services?

Cadre Cartel: (Laughs) Everyone is most definitely worth our services. We are here to help provide upcoming and established artists alike with quality work whether it is album layouts, DJ hosting, or collaborations. If we have the ability to take care of your needs, we will.

GrungeCake: Are you fans of the music before you reach out?

Cadre Cartel: If we are reaching out, then yes we are usually already fans of their work. Having said that, we are always looking to meet and work with new artists! That’s actually how we found our two producers Marcel and Devin, amazingly talented people. As well as an artist from Indiana named Wes T — who we are about to start working with heavily.

GrungeCake: What do you do if a ‘wack artist’ contacts you and wants your services?

Cadre Cartel: An artist is an artist. If you work hard, believe in, and stand behind the work you put out — we will work with you.

GrungeCake: How did the G-Unit collaboration happen? What exactly did you do with or for G-Unit?

Cadre Cartel: Basically, the story behind us and Trav getting together on that Leaders of the New School tape was at the same time he had just released his new single ‘Ride the Wave’. DJ 4five is good friends with Diesel, head of G-Unit Promo; he approached him with the single to push out there in Canada in all the clubs and radio stations. 4five was really feeling the record, so he contacted Trav and was like, “Let’s put out a tape.” We all just clicked from there. We are currently setting up his newest tape title to be announced soon but definitely keep an eye out for that.

GrungeCake: Talk about the Creative Control video. How did you feel when you found out your work was going to be featured?

Cadre Cartel: It was definitely an exciting moment. That situation is the epitome of the idea that we are trying to push. To put out quality work, really try to help the other person and build their brand. Respect and hard work will always be appreciated and returned if the company you keep is of that same mindset.

GrungeCake: Elaborate on your portfolio.

Cadre Cartel: I would like to think my portfolio truly portrays range. There are some cartoony pieces as well as more realistic layouts. I always ask the client what style are they going for or do they have a direction in which they want to go. I try to provide people with as few limitations as possible. Which I hope my portfolio demonstrates as well as the rest of the work our company does.

GrungeCake: Cadre Cartel, where does that name come from?

Cadre Cartel: Cadre Cartel, simply put, means “Foundation Family.” We are a group of people that have been working extremely hard and have been blessed with the opportunity to work with amazingly talented artists. So DJ 4five and I sat down and put together a plan to help give other artists or businesses a trusted avenue get them to the level they want to be.

GrungeCake: What made you contact GrungeCake Magazine for an interview?

Cadre Cartel: I was actually referred to GrungeCake from an old friend. After viewing the site and reading some of the articles, I thought it would be a great place to introduce the company. I admire GrungeCake‘s love of art and its forms of expression. Whether it is music, illustration, photography, etc.

GrungeCake: What makes your team news worthy?

Cadre Cartel: The fact that we are bringing a positive message out with our work. Nothing is impossible it is just the question of how much work and sacrifice you are willing to put forth to achieve your goal. Keep a positive group of people around you and do not let anyone tell you otherwise.

GrungeCake: What’s next for Cadre Cartel?

Cadre Cartel: Whew! We have Trav’s new tape, Huey’s new video “Hello to Haters” featured on XXLmag.com, Cadre Cartel’s official tape that will feature known and unknown artists. Also, 4five and I have up and coming scheduled events. We have a few projects with an artist by the name of Wes T, which was mentioned before. Collaborations and projects with other artists should make for a very exciting summer and provide a lot of growth.

I enjoy Sonia Garcia Moreno’s use of colour and her personality. What makes her more compelling is her story. For Sonia Garcia Moreno’s portfolio, kindly click here.

Sonia Garcia Moreno’s Bio (Translated by Jenni Wu):

In her work, artist and designer Sonia Garcia Moreno (born 1980 in Bremen, Germany) handles topics like finding your identity and general identity issues. Moreno, who lives in Berlin now, digests her personal experiences and the overcoming of psychic problems in her mash-ups, as well as sexual issues and her own migration background as a daughter of a Spanish immigration family. The collages/mash-ups are half handmade and half computer generated.

Title: The Crazy Chick

Personal:

GrungeCake: Who is Sonia Garcia Moreno? What is her personality like? What are her pet peeves? What makes her laugh, uncontrollably? What was she doing before the online social networking phenomenon?

Sonia Garcia Moreno: I’m the daughter of Spanish immigrants in Germany. I love life and hate when people walk too slowly in front of me and stop all of a sudden. Sometimes when I lie in bed at night and think about the day, I burst into laughter. When I feel over-socialised I become a little aloof.

Title: Economic Crisi

GrungeCake: Does she watch a lot of television? Does she read newspapers? What is your take on the current state of world politics? What makes an ideal weekend for Sonia Garcia Moreno?

Sonia Garcia Moreno: I rarely watch television, only sometimes for the news. I don’t buy newspapers either, I get my information through the web or magazines. But, I can’t tell you a lot about world politics. My ideal weekend contains the following things: art, culture, and an occasional techno party.

Illustration:

Title: Vagina Valentina

GrungeCake: I am easily attracted to your personal works. Explain ‘Vagina Valentina’. What’s behind the title?

Sonia Garcia Moreno: “Vagina Valentina” was supposed to become a play for the theater in which Valentina snarfs chocolates from people who are in love. Eventually, she got punished and sentenced to work at a beer factory.

Title: The Taxman

GrungeCake: Like my friend, Benjamin Stasola, I recognize a repetition of colours in certain pieces; The Taxman, Vagina Valentina, The Crazy Chick, Economic Crisi, The Zeldoxes, and Waiting to Die. Are these pieces part of a series? What is/are the message/s you want to share with your fans?

Sonia Garcia Moreno: Yes, they’re part of a series while the Zeldox images came first. They all deal with personal daily life experiences, coping with psychic states of crisis and questions of sexuality.

Title: Zeldox #1

Title: Zeldox #2

Title: Zeldox #3

GrungeCake: Do you enjoy working with mixed media? What do you use to illustrate? Are you sketching with pencil on paper or are you a tablet illustrator?

Sonia Garcia Moreno: I love the mixture of analogue and digital. I draw with an ink pen and colorize on the computer.

GrungeCake: How long have been in the visual arts business? Is there a demand for your style of illustration in Berlin, Germany?

Sonia Garcia Moreno: I’ve been working as an artist for a couple of years with a special emphasis on techniques. I’ve borrowed from classic illustration. Berlin’s art scene is quite open minded and doesn’t judge when people cross the line between illustration and the arts.

GrungeCake: Which artists (or objects) are you most influenced by? Have you influenced other artists?

Sonia Garcia Moreno: Daily life is my motor. What inspires me is this city and my environment. Of course, I enjoy exhibitions, museums or theaters. But mostly I profit from my experiences with fellow artists. They keep me going. I think it’s a mutual benefit.

Title: Waiting to Die

Graphic Design:

GrungeCake: Is your graphic design works your “bread and butter work”?

Sonia Garcia Moreno: Yeah… it’s funy: I am also often asked what I prefer: design or the arts. But I don’t wanna make that segregation. I think it’s more clever if you call it culture.

GrungeCake: What is good design? What is bad design?

Sonia Garcia Moreno: When it comes to design, I’m a purist. Less is more. I like simple clarity. To me, bad design is everything that screams for attention and makes me wish for a moment of peace.

GrungeCake: Is GrungeCake popular in your city? What are suggestions that can help to make GrungeCake popular in your city?

Sonia Garcia Moreno: Well, social networking is a global thing and maybe you should do more over here, because GrungeCake isn’t too visible in Berlin. Nevertheless, I always have the feeling that it works on a word-to-mouth level, too, especially in Berlin. So, I’ll spread the word.

GrungeCake: What do you think about our website? Is there any particular artist or thing that you like about our website?

Sonia Garcia Moreno: What I like about GrungeCake is that there’s a print version besides the weblog. I love a fresh print mag in my hands from time to time; I hope it’ll stay an important medium in the digital age.

GrungeCake: What’s next for Sonia Garcia Moreno?

Sonia Garcia Moreno: I WANT TO EAT MORE CARROTS.

If it isn’t obvious, the title of this blog is simple, humorous, and interesting. Dooky. I can almost swear, Kennebrew makes the ugliest of words, so ‘cool’. But(t). Seriously, Kennebrew covers a variety of topics: her dream-dwelling-place, her past in editorial photography, her crafts, the deaths of music publications — that I also liked and wanted to work for, and Pieter Hugo. Now, that’s a dooky blog for yuh. Check it out when you don’t have shxt to do! I just had to say that.

Blurb from YAMS:

Benjamin Cutivet, or Benjamin Stasola, has an unfamiliar design style that I connect with. Today, I dedicated my lunula design to Mr. Stasola. Don’t believe me, click here. I really enjoy his face, also. It’s welcoming. Tell your friends about the rave, Stasola is here. Stasola is a Parisian Graphic Designer, Illustrator, Photographer, Video Editor and Musician. Yuh!

GrungeCake: Who is Benjamin Cutivet as a designer?

Benjamin Cutivet: I’m a freelance graphic-designer, musician and video editor. I’m French.

GrungeCake: What is your primary instant to bad design?

Benjamin Cutivet: We have to live with it, I guess. We’re surrounded by bad design.

GrungeCake: Describe ‘good design’.

Benjamin Cutivet: Good design has to be both classy and catchy, I guess.

GrungeCake: Are you familiar with Milton Glaser? What do you think of his portfolio?

Benjamin Cutivet: Not really, I confess. I know a few works, but when I was in the art school, graphic design teaching was more based on European designers. David Carson too was adored by some of us.

GrungeCake: Who are the most adorned and praised Parisian Graphic Designers?

Benjamin Cutivet: M/M are some of the most famous French designers for sure, and even if I appreciate some of their work, I don’t think I’m really influenced by graphic designers. Most of the time, I’m more influenced by music or movies. Lately Tune Yards, Yacht, Eagle & Talon or more generally Sparklehorse, Swell or Bumblebeez are always a great inspiration for work!

GrungeCake: What is Stasola? What does its name behold?

Benjamin Cutivet: Stasola used to be the name of my first solo musical project. I used to invite many different and talented people from all around the world, to come and play in this project and each show was really unique. The link was the projection of pictures and graphic works during the shows. The last show was a musical and graphic creation around David Cronenberg’s movies. I kept the name Stasola, because it’s kinda linked to my Italian roots and it became my second last name now.

GrungeCake: Are you a freelancer or do you work for pay at a firm?

Benjamin Cutivet: I’ve been working as a freelancer for 10 years now. I mainly work as a graphic designer but I’m also working as a video editor from time to time. It would be hard to work for a company again after all these years of “freedom,” but freedom has a price and some months are harder than others are. Working as a freelancer is quite convenient when you’re a musician too and go on tour sometimes.

GrungeCake: Seemingly, your event advertisements are your strongest pieces. Do you enjoy creating this the most? Why?

Benjamin Cutivet: One of my main clients is a Parisian booking agency called Super! They’re booking European shows for all the best Indie acts and it’s a huge pleasure to create posters and flyers for Animal Collective, Jose Gonzales, or Au Revoir Simone. Plus, they totally trust me and I can do whatever I want. As a musician, creating graphic works about music is inspiring.

GrungeCake: How did you discover GrungeCake Magazine? What do you think about it?

Benjamin Cutivet: I love to explore the web to find new great websites and magazines. GrungeCake was one of these random, unexpected, and great meetings. The first time I spent a very long time reading all of the information online. I have to say; I was first caught by the name. It sounds really cool and reminds me of this Sparklehorse song; “I’m the dog that ate / your birthday cake”. That’s my vision of a “GrungeCake.”

Our regards to the band and the family of Mark Linkous.

GrungeCake: To date, what is your biggest accomplishment?

Benjamin Cutivet: As a man and as a designer, I would say my wonderful and lovely daughter even if it sounds cliché. I “designed” her pretty well! I also like to think the best is always to come.

GrungeCake: I notice that throughout your portfolio, there are the same hues. Is it on purpose? Does the client mind or notice it?

Benjamin Cutivet: I guess I have a “style”, like I like to use primary or flashy colors, bitmap photos or some kind of specific “effects” like this. I guess my clients are choosing to work with me because they’ve seen my previous works, and I try to adapt my universe to each new work even if it’s a really different register.

GrungeCake: How {design} smart do you think your clients are? Give a percentile.

Benjamin Cutivet: It depends on the clients, but I think my clients and people are more aware to “good design.” Since a few years, one can notice how graphic the ads became. Graphic design is increasingly popular with the new generations. Everyone wants to be a graphic designer in France. In a way, it is good, but I think this job will be soon saturated… if it is not already.

GrungeCake: Oslø Telescopic, tell me about their music. What was that project like?

Benjamin Cutivet: Oslø Telescopic is a weird collective wearing bandages on their faces and nobody really knows where they are from, maybe Norway, Iceland or Hong-Kong? Their first release was a musical and graphic trilogy. The three CDs were making a full panoramic photo. In 2002, they kidnapped Dominique A, a famous French Indie songwriter, locked him in their bunker-studio, and forced him to sing on their instrumental tracks. The Dominique Ø Project was the result, a mix of experimental pop-electro-rock.

It seems they decided to stop playing music for now, but the next generation carries on with a new killer project called Elektrisk Gønner. Watch out!

GrungeCake: What’s next for Benjamin Cutivet and Stasola Design?

Benjamin Cutivet: The best is to come! I’d really like to work with foreign clients, and designing CDs for some of my favorite bands would be really cool as well. In addition, as my English is getting worse and worse, I have to spend some time again in North America soon.

Over three years ago, when taking necessary legal actions to protect my ideas and title for GrungeCake Magazine, I came across Blake’s work when searching for a barcode company. In The Virgin Episode, you can find Fun Facts about Scott Blake’s work, his Barcode Jesus, Madonna, and a self-portrait. To order The Virgin Episode, click here.

Scott Blake’s Bio:

Scott Blake was born in Tampa, Florida is the autumn of 1976. Nearing the turn of the millennium, Blake created a series of artworks that involved reworkings of barcodes to create artwork. Barcode art was something that quickly became an internet thread. It was largely unknown exactly where this fad had originated from. His work has been shown at various galleries and featured in magazines such as The New York Times, FHM and Adbusters. His site has also been translated in many languages. For his efforts and vision, he was recognized by the Adobe Design Achievement Awards, held in the Guggenheim Museum NYC. He currently lives in Omaha, Nebraska.

Similar to the works of Pop Art, Scott Blake elected to use usual everyday images to produce his art. His early works were based entirely on the idea of creating images and art from barcodes, which are ubiquitous in today’s world. But unlike Pop Art, he used barcodes as a tool and image, such as his portraits which were made entirely from bar codes. Blake had started this project around the time of the Y2K bug craze and the turn of the millennium. Around this time, there was a craze with barcode style artworks and designs. It is unclear whether Scott Blake had direct input on this popularized phenomena.

In 2003, Blake created Downloading Pixels which shows a progression of downloaded pixels that in turn become an image that could be viewed on a monitor or mobile device. Like John F. Simon Jr’s Every Icon, each pixel is an image that loads up at different intervals to make the image seem like an animation, caused by the changing pixels. Both Every Icon and Downloading Pixels use a system of algorithms with basic image data to form images. Visitors to the website can adjust the size of the overall image by selecting from many image sizes (such as 48×48, 192×192, 300×300, or a very large 972×972). There are also options for different styles, which define styles and colors. After the settings are adjusted, the image is then based on the browser technology, internet connection speed, and device. So this work looks differently on an iPhone as compared to a PC running Mozilla FireFox.

A young Graphic Designer's work caught my eye a few months ago and I decided to share her work with my world. Graphic Designer Akeara has cultivating editing skills and her work ethic makes me proud to be a female. Estrogen power, haha!

Photo: Courtesy of Akeara

GrungeCake: Tell us about Akeara.

Akeara: I was born in Arkansas. Raised in Memphis, Tennessee. I always had an intense love for anything artistic. Whether it was music, painting or acting, I was interested. My high school offered Creative and Performing Arts. I chose acting. I never dreamed that graphic designing would open the doors it would for me.

Photo: Courtesy of Akeara

GrungeCake: Are you academically trained or are you self-taught?

Akeara: I would say I’m the trial and error. I would look through tutorials and break down the tools of the programs to see how they work. My own frustration was a way for me to become better.

GrungeCake: Who is your favourite designer?

Akeara: Who is your favourite designer? My all time favorite designer is a guy by the name of Adhemas Batistas. He has mastered the transition from paper to illustration. I dedicated a piece to him entitled, BEST WISHES BATISTA. He is intricate in detail.

GrungeCake: Your designs are magical. How often are you in practice?

Akeara: I try to do a new piece just for myself whenever I feel my inspiration at the top of its level. The more I become emerged with creating new art, the more I come into myself as an artist.

Photo: Courtesy of Akeara

GrungeCake: When creating graphics, when is ‘eye catching’ “too much”?

When you don’t use your own opinion and you’re going off of something else you see and when you start to fill with a sense of conceit. Each design is like a fingerprint. Every designer’s style is their own. When you start to become a clone of another designer, you’ll lose yourself, even if the work is beautiful.

Photo: Courtesy of Akeara

GrungeCake: When creating graphics, what do you feel is the most important aspect: Planning, design or implementation and why?

Akeara: Implementation. THE WHOLE PROCESS. No architect builds without a solid plan or an idea. It’s the same way with graphic artist/designers. The key is to not over-think it and create what you feel. Resources are also very important. An artist is only as good as his resources. Where are you pulling your inpiration from without stealing someone else’s creativity? So, it definitely is a step by step process. Once you learn the structure, you have a different view on how an artist works.

GrungeCake: Do you have a website? How can we contact you?

Akeara: I have a website in the works! It will integrate my photography with my graphic designing. It is to push the plan I want to set out for the future.

Photo: Courtesy of Akeara

GrungeCake: What’s next for Akeara?

Akeara: I am very passionate when I say, “I want to be the one you see in magazines…” and I don’t mean in my physical sense. I mean my work. I want to move into editorial designing using photography and designing of my own. One of my favorite magazines is Harper’s Bazaar. I want to, one day, be able to open the book and see my work.

GrungeCake: When did you first begin to express yourself as an artist and what triggered it?

Greg Mike: Luckily growing up, I had a family that was very into the arts, everything from scenery to architecture. From as young as I can remember they made sure I was surrounded by creativity, everything from sculpting, painting, drawing. I can remember being 8 or 9 just being taught to think outside the box and to use art as a form of expression. At first, I got really heavy into oil painting but once I hit 12 I started skating all day, everyday. Naturally, the elements of graffiti and street art caught my attention and sucked me in as I started visiting NYC on the weekends. From there art became an addition, I knew at that point I couldn’t live without it and I’d be creating till they put me in the casket.

GrungeCake: We find your artwork very creative and interesting. Do you have any inspiration or theme for your artwork?

Greg Mike: I find inspiration in everything I see, it might be the shape of a pair of scissors sitting on my desk or a dream I had the night before. You can find inspiration in the simplest things in life, it doesn’t even necessarily have to be visual either you just have to keep an open mind. I have always had a strong love for music and feel it really moves me at times. It’s hard for me to draw, paint or create without music on. Music is my speed and definitely motivates my work and keeps my brain fueled and moving. As for a theme, I think recently my newer work has been a bit brighter, bolder and not as serious as it was about 5 years ago. In economic times like this I really feel everyone is so tight, dark and serious, so I try to do my part to add a little bit of life into the mix.

GrungeCake: Do you develop new characters? Or is there just one set that you’ve created to use?

Greg Mike: I am always developing new characters and there are about 100 different characters I will be debuting for the “Popstars and Cokeheads” series. Many have the same signature loudmouth with the snaggle, chipped or missing tooth or tired eyes but all are very different and unique. With art and design I feel it’s all about progression, like a body of water that sits for too long without movement it eventually turns to a nasty swamp so I always attempt to have forward motion and progression to ensure my work doesn’t become stale or stagnant.

GrungeCake: How did the soda can project come about?

Greg Mike: Honestly, I was sketching one day and created these “mad cans” characters which initially were just drawings just getting some emotions out. They weren’t even soda cans at that point. I had been painting 2D surfaces for years and one day after recycling tons of cans it hit me. I worked for about 3 weeks and developed a technique to prime and paint the cans. What started at 1 quickly grew to 20 and I thought to myself I need to do 100 of these guys. It started last February and developed into a rather large project which now includes huge 3D sculptures, cans, teeshirts, posters and collectables and a ton of new items on the horizon. I have always been into word play and one night while tossing and turning trying to get some rest the name “Popstars and Cokeheads” hit me and I ran with it. Here we are today about 1 month out from the show with about 110 pieces finished.

GrungeCake: How long does each can take to completely finish?

Greg Mike: The cans take anywhere from 3-4 hours from start to finish. As for the larger pieces, which will be released at the show take anywhere from 3 days to a week.

GrungeCake: Will they be for sale? If so, where and when?

Greg Mike: Yes, we will be selling them at the shows in San Fran and other cities we are doing the shows at. After the show remaining items will be launched online on www.gregmike.com

GrungeCake: With your array of canvases that we’ve seen you use so far, what other mediums would you like to use that you haven’t yet?

Greg Mike: I’d like to get into building and recycling larger 3D pieces that most people don’t usually think of as art. I really found the project at hand interesting as most people look at cans a something to hold their soda and toss them or crush them. I hope to make people think about what surrounds them is really art and what can be converted or recycled into art. I find it so much more challenging working on 3D surfaces and having to develop a new process to achieve the look you are going for.

GrungeCake: Where can people view your work?

Greg Mike: Gallery shows and on the streets. The best place to stay up to date is at: www.gregmike.com

GrungeCake: Would you be interested in doing some work with GrungeCake?

Greg Mike: I am always open to new projects and ideas, let me know what you have in mind!

GrungeCake: When you first saw/heard the name “GrungeCake Crisis” what were your initial thoughts?

Greg Mike: An old beat up birthday cake but maybe I was thinking a little to literally. (Greg Mike smiles)
